Valley Line West LRT – Sanitary Re-alignment (2023)

Location – Edmonton
Owner – City of Edmonton

To accommodate new elevated structures and bridge works along the Valley Line West LRT, three sanitary realignments were completed using deep linerplate shafts and handtunneled installations to navigate dense utility corridors with minimal surface disruption. The program involved constructing three shafts ranging from 6 m to 10 m deep, each intercepting existing sanitary services before redirecting flows to nearby trunk connections.

At Groat Road, a 3.66 m diameter, 6 m deep shaft provided access for a 28 m long handexcavated arched tunnel used to reroute a major sanitary line and abandon a portion of the existing drainage system.

At the Misericordia Hospital, two additional relocations were completed: a 9 m deep shaft enabling 58 m of hand tunneling for a new 675 mm sanitary service, and a 10 m deep shaft facilitating 35 m of hand tunneling for a new 600 mm service.

Across all locations, new pipe installations were completed through the tunnels before live connections were made, and each project concluded with the abandonment of the original sanitary segments and associated drilldrop connections.
